Internxt Cons

When it comes to collaboration and productivity features, Internxt definitely isn’t the flashiest option on the market. However, what they lack in certain features they make up for with a strong commitment to keeping your data safe.

If you’re looking for a cloud storage provider that takes privacy and security seriously, Internxt is a top competitor.

Read on to find out where Internxt stands out from the competition, as well as where it falls short.

internxt homepage

TL;DR

Internxt is a great cloud storage provider when it comes to protecting your privacy and the security of your data. They offer a generous 10GB forever free plan and put user-friendliness as the central focus of their desktop and mobile apps.

However, this is a bare minimum cloud storage provider. There are no third-party integrations or collaboration features, while there are extremely limited sharing options and sync settings. With Internxt, what you see is what you get: a secure place to store your data in the cloud, and not much more.

Plans and Pricing

Internxt offers a decently generous 10GB of free space when you sign up, with no strings attached.

If you are looking to upgrade to more space, Internxt has plans for both individuals and businesses:

Internxt Individual Plans

  • 200 GB Plan – $5.49/month or $49.99/year
  • 2 TB Plan – $10.99/month or $119.99/year or $599 for life
  • 5 TB Plan – $22.99/month or $229.99/year or $1,099 for life
  • 10 TB Plan – $34.99/month or $349.99/year or $1,599 for life

Internxt Business Plans

Internxt’s pricing for their business plans is a bit more complicated because both the price and the amount of space offered are listed as being per user, but most of the plans require a minimum number of users.

For example, the cheapest business plan is listed as $3.49 per user, per month, but it stipulates a minimum of 2 users. So, the actual price per month is going to be at least $7.50.

200GB Per User Plan

  • $3.49 per user, per month (billed at $83.76/year)
  • Minimum of 2 users

2TB Per User Plan

  • $8.99 per user, per month (billed at $215.76/year)
  • Minimum of 2 users

20TB Per User Plan

  • $93.99 per user, per month (billed at $2255.76/year)
  • Minimum of 2 users

All of Internxt’s plans come with a 30-day money-back guarantee, encrypted file storage and sharing, and access from all your devices.

Despite their somewhat confusing prices, the best deal Internxt offers is their individual 2TB plan for $107.88/year. 2TB is a lot of space, and the price is very reasonable.

Internxt Lifetime plans

internxt lifetime cloud storage pricing

Internxt now offers lifetime cloud storage plans, meaning you pay a one-time fee for access to cloud storage:

  • 2TB for life: $599 (one-time payment)
  • 5TB for life: $1,099 (one-time payment)
  • 10TB for life: $1,599 (one-time payment)

Note: Internxt’s website lists all of its prices in euros. I’ve converted the prices to USD based on the conversion rate at the time of writing, which means that the prices are subject to change slightly depending on the day.

Key Features

Unfortunately, Internxt falls short when it comes to features. This could be because they’re a relatively new cloud storage provider and intend to expand in the future, and I have to hope that’s the case.

At the moment there are no third-party integrations, which puts Internxt noticeably behind cloud storage providers like Box.com. There are also no media players or built-in file reviews.

However, that doesn’t mean that it’s necessarily a bad option for your cloud storage needs. There are a few areas where Internxt goes above and beyond, which I’ll explore below.

Security and Privacy

internxt security and privacy

Now for the good news: when it comes to security and privacy, Internxt does a great job.

Internxt uses what their website refers to as “military-grade encryption,” by which they mean AES 256-bit encryption. This is a super-secure encryption protocol that’s extremely difficult for hackers to crack.

They use end-to-end encryption that scrambles and disguises your data before it ever leaves your device, keeping it safe from prying eyes at every stage of the uploading and storage process.

In addition to airtight encryption protocols, Internxt also employs a unique method for keeping your data safe. It divides your data into fragments and stores it spread out across several different servers in different countries.

Thanks to the physical distance between the servers, it would be almost impossible for all your data to be lost in one attack or incident. As a final security measure, it secures these servers using blockchain technology.

In terms of privacy, Internxt allows users to enable two-factor authentication. They’re also a zero-knowledge provider, which means the company can never see or access your data.

Internxt’s servers are primarily located in European countries such as Germany, France, and Finland, all of which have strict laws regarding privacy that Internxt (and all companies with servers in the European Union) are forced to comply with.

As a general rule of thumb, choosing a cloud storage provider with servers in an EU country or in Switzerland (which has some of the strictest laws regarding internet privacy in the world) is a good way to ensure that your data will be safe. Other EU or Swiss-based cloud storage providers include pCloud, Sync.com, and Icedrive.

Desktop and Mobile Apps

In its own words, Internxt claims that it is “shaping the technology we would love to use in the future, led by security, privacy, and user-centered design.” They’ve certainly met this goal when it comes to security and privacy, but what about user-centered design?

As it turns out, Internxt has delivered on this promise, too. Internxt offers desktop and mobile apps for cloud storage, meaning you can access your data from pretty much any of your devices.

Like most cloud storage providers, Internxt’s desktop app creates a sync folder on your computer after you’ve downloaded it.

internxt desktop app

Simply drag-and-drop files into the sync folder, and they’ll be immediately uploaded to the cloud. If you go to the settings menu in the sync folder, you can choose between “full sync” and “upload only,” as well as a few other specifications.

sync folder

Although this is a fairly user-friendly and intuitive setup, Internxt’s sync folder is missing some features offered by other providers, including a context menu option, meaning you can’t share files stored in the sync folder directly from your desktop.

Internxt’s mobile app is compatible with Android and iOS devices, and it functions very similarly to the desktop app. You can click on the sync folder to easily access your uploaded files.

From the mobile app, you can download files already stored in the cloud or upload more files, and you can create links to share files with others directly from the app, something you can’t do with the desktop app.

In short, what the desktop and mobile apps lack in extra features, they try to make up for in intuitive, user-centered design.

But beyond that, there’s not much else. Internxt is simple and easy to use but not the best option for cloud storage pros (or anyone) looking for a wide range of features.

Syncing, File Sharing, and Backups

internxt cloud storage

Unfortunately, Internxt’s options for syncing, file sharing, and backups are pretty sparse.

Users can upload files to the cloud (the bare minimum for any cloud storage solution) and share files with other users, albeit without any ability to make adjustments to the links beyond setting a download limit (a specific number of times the link will be valid).

You can also select specific folders to be backed up to the cloud at certain intervals.

There is no file versioning or deleted file retention, features that have largely become standard in the field but are noticeably absent with Internxt. This means that if your data somehow gets corrupted, or you simply need to see a previous version of a file or document, you’re out of luck.

Overall, Internxt has a lot of room for improvement in the areas of file sharing and collaboration. If you’re planning to use the files in your cloud storage regularly for work, you’d be better off with an option like Box.com.

Free Storage

Internxt is generous with its free cloud storage, offering a 10GB “forever free” plan with no strings attached.

Best of all, unlike some other cloud storage providers, all of the benefits and features included with the paid plans are also included in the free plan. If 10GB is all you need, you’re free to use it for as long as you want without paying a cent.

Customer Service

Internxt proudly claims to be a customer-centered company, and its customer service reflects this commitment. They offer a knowledge base on their website that includes an email address you can use to get help with any problem you’re experiencing.

In addition to email support, Internxt offers 24/7 live chat support if you need help immediately and can’t wait for an email response.

Although they don’t offer phone support, this is in line with a general trend in the industry away from phone support towards 24/7 live chat, and users are unlikely to miss it given how helpful Internxt’s email and live chat support is.

Internxt Products

Internxt offers two cloud storage products at the moment, with a third released in late 2022.

Internxt Drive

Internxt Drive is Internxt’s primary cloud storage solution; in other words, what most of my review has been focused on. On their website, Internxt emphasizes Drive’s airtight encryption and easy-to-use, intuitive interface, which is indeed its strongest features.

Internxt Drive offers a decently wide range of plans, with storage space ranging from 10GB of free space to an impressive 20TB of space for around $200 per month (see the “Plans and Pricing” section above for more details).

The best deal Internxt offers is its 2TB Individual plan for only $9.79/month (billed yearly at $117.43).

Internxt Photos

internxt photos

Internxt Photos is a cloud storage solution specifically for photos and image files. With Photos, you can store your precious images safely in the cloud and view them any time you want from any device.

Internxt Photos’ gallery is as easy to use as Internxt Drive and comes with a setup tutorial (although given how simple it is, it probably won’t be necessary). You can view your photos in high resolution from the gallery, as well as download them and send shareable links. You can even adjust the settings on each link to specify the number of times your photo file can be downloaded or shared.

Beyond that, there’s not much that you can do with Photos. Cloud storage solutions like Flickr Pro and Google Photos offer more versatility and even come with editing tools.

Internxt Send

Send is Internxt’s newest app, which will provide a secure way to send and share documents online. Send is not available yet, but is set to launch at the end of 2022.

The company hasn’t released much information about Send yet, but they have said it will be free to use for anyone who has an Internxt account – no additional purchases necessary.

Questions & Answers

Our Verdict ⭐

Internxt has a lot of room for improvement, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot to love here, too. Its lack of third-party integration and extremely limited collaboration and file sharing features are disappointing, and I’ll be looking to see if the company will improve upon these shortcomings in the future.
