Motorola Foldable With Two Extendable Screens Leaked

Last year the tech giant Motorola presented the concept of its first rollable smartphone at Lenovo’s MWC. A single display device, called Motorola Moto Rizr, could expand its display size from 5-inch to 6.5-inch.

Today, thanks to our collaboration with David from @xleaks7, we spotted the patent and have information about another exciting concept Motorola is currently working on – a foldable smartphone with two expandable displays.

Based on information from David’s source, the new concept smartphone could be called Motorola Rizr Dual.

The Problem Motorola is Trying to Solve

Traditional smartphones often face a dilemma – the balance between compactness and screen real estate. While candy bar, clamshell, or slider designs offer different form factors, they can be limiting.

This patent addresses the challenge by introducing a device that unfolds to dramatically increase its display area, providing users with a more immersive and expansive visual experience.

When extended, its display area is almost four times larger than in compact, folded position.

Patent’s Core:

At the heart of this patent lies a novel dual-device housing assembly equipped with translating blade assemblies featuring flexible displays.

The device comes with a controller that intelligently monitors the device’s position, using sensors to detect when it is unfolded. Triggered by a display positioning event, translation mechanisms are activated to extend two blade assemblies.

These blades can emerge either from opposite sides of the hinge or from adjacent sides, dynamically enhancing the display area.

  1. Dual Foldable Housings: The device sports a unique design with dual foldable housings, allowing it to maintain a compact form in its closed position and expand significantly when unfolded.

  3. Translation Mechanisms: The patent introduces translation mechanisms that work in unison to extend blade assemblies. These assemblies, equipped with flexible displays, contribute to the substantial increase in the device’s screen size.
  4. Variable Blade Extension: Users have the flexibility to extend blade assemblies either from opposite sides of the hinge or from adjacent sides, providing options for different usage scenarios.


Release Date

The unveiling of the Motorola Rizr rollable smartphone concept took place in February 2023. Building on this trend, there’s speculation that the Motorola Rizr Dual concept might make its debut at MWC this year.

While rollable smartphones are yet to be launched widely, several tech giants are actively engaged in developing such innovative devices.

Recent updates suggest that Samsung might introduce its first generation rollable smartphone as soon as 2025, with projections indicating that the earliest availability of a rollable featuring two extendable displays could be in 2026.
